Today in History LOS ANGELES TIMES The last time the All-Star game was played in Milwaukee, in 1975, it was also the 24th and last appearance of Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, whose career had begun in Milwaukee with the Braves. In his final game, he represented the Milwaukee Brewers and lined out as a pinch-hitter. "I was just a shell of myself," he said. "But I still considered it an honor to have played my last game in Milwaukee." It was his only appearance as an American League player. In his 23 All-Star games as a Milwaukee Atlanta Brave, Aaron batted .179 with two home runs in 67 at-bats.

Home, sweet home: Jarrod Washburn, the Anaheim Angels' southpaw with a 9-2 record, is in Wisconsin, but not for the All-Star game. He took the red-eye home to tiny Danbury in the northwestern part of the state but will be back with the team to pitch in Thursday night's game in Kansas City, Mo. He told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he was disappointed that Garret Anderson was the only Angel selected for tonight's game. "I don't think it was right that we only got one guy picked, with as well as we've played and as many guys as we have doing well," he said. Jackets is not short on confidence.

When asked to describe his strengths, the left wing from the Ontario Hockey League said, "Go in the corners, dig the puck out, fore-checking, can score in front of the net, a good talent, and still comes back in our own end and plays a defensive role too. I think I bring an all-around game, a Brendan Shanahan type." Seen in Cincinnati: A fan carrying a sign in Cinergy Field that read: "4 Reds Tickets $30, 4 Sodas $10, 4 Hot Dogs $15, Ken Griffey worthless." Fair warning: "Clip and save," said Blackie Sherrod of the Dallas News. "Your grandson will see the day of the 8-foot center in the NBA." Trivia answer: Kirk Gibson, the Los Angeles Dodger who was named National League MVP in 1988. And finally: After Brazil had won the World Cup over Germany, all of CART's Brazilian drivers cut their hair to match the style of soccer star Ronaldo, but Rubens Barrichello, their countryman in Formula One, decided against it. "I couldn't risk it," the Ferrari driver said.

"The way my hair is thinning, I was afraid it wouldn't grow anymore." Reno Astro Who is baseball's only most valuable player who never played in an All-Star game? Mr. Everything: When Cincinnati Reds outfielder Adam Dunn was told that he would be the youngest player in the All-Star game, at 21 years 8 months, and the biggest, at 6-foot-6 and 245 pounds, he grinned and replied, "And, I'm the best looking, and the smartest." Amie's advice: Senior tour pros are permitted to ride in carts, but Arnold Palmer vehemently opposes the practice. "When you start complaining about the heat and humidity, the hell with that," he told USA Today. "Just fo home, sit in front of the TV and ave a beer." Another opinion: Then there is comedian Joe E. Lewis, who when asked how he played golf, said, "I play in the low 80s.

If it's any hotter than that, I won't play." Talking the talk: Rick Nash may be only 1 8, but the first pick in the NHL draft by the Columbus Blue What's Your Opinion? wmmmmmmewmewmmmmmmmmmmmmmammmmawmamatmewm The Reno Gazette-Journal wants readers' opinions on topics in the world of sports. On Tuesday, he had a four-way bypass. He was released on Saturday and has been taking it easy at home since. "It went pretty well," he said.

"I'm just kind of taking it day to day and seem to be getting a little better every day." BAIL BIG WINNER OVER COWBOY CHRISTMAS: South Dakota multi-events hand Jesse Bail won $33,456 over the past seven-day span, known as Cowboy Christmas, the second-highest total for the Fourth of July run by a PRCA cowboy ever. In 1 999 Ty Murray set the record for Fourth of July earnings with $37,630. Bail's conquest moved him past Cash Myers and into the top spot in the world all-around standings with $1 22,961 The week's work also moved him into second place in saddle bronc riding and fourth place in bull riding. In a week in which ProRodeo sanctions 38 PRCA rodeos in 1 9 states and two Canadian provinces from New Jersey to California, Bail won money at seven rodeos. His biggest paycheck came from the Greeley (Colo.) Independence Stampede, where he earned $1 1 ,409.

The Fourth of July run is significant for cowboys because so many rodeos end during the week. Other than the U.S. Pyramid Lake's Clint Harry is one half of the hottest team roping tandem in professional rodeo. Harry and his partner, Jason Handy of Billings, have been moving steadily up the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings since they partnered up in the spring and both cowboys appear headed for their first berths in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Handy is ranked eighth in the team roping heading standings with $35,102 and Harry is ranked 16th in the heeling standings with $19,912.

They have won more than $10,000 each over the past week a stretch revolving around the Fourth of July known as "Cowboy Christmas" because of the number of rodeos and amount of prize money available. Their success also includes strong showings in the Tour Rounds of the first three rodeos what we have now, we've got a real shot at (making the NFR)." Harry, a 1998 Reed High School graduate, is in his third year on the PRCA Tour. A member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Indian Tribe, he grew up in Nixon, a third-generation cowboy. "My whole family ropes," he said. "My dad, my uncle, my grandpa, everybody ropes." Harry won his first all-around buckle when he was 6 years old at a rodeo in Fallon.

Now in his third season on the PRCA circuit, he and Handy hooked up in March at the Laughlin River Stampede. They won a round at the Red Bluff Round-Up in April, then won the average at the Clovis (Calif.) Rodeo the following week. Harry said it's been a good partnership. "Our styles kind of match," Harry said. "We have the same goals and it kind of works out pretty good like that." Their Summer Tour points, and much of their winnings, came at the Reno Rodeo, the Greeley Independence Stampede and the St.

Paul (Ore.) Rodeo, where they won the average and collected more than $3,000 apiece. Harry said they will hit all the remaining Summer Tour rodeos, and as many other rodeos as they can over the remainder of the season in hopes of making the NFR. "We'll try to go to everything and hopefully see where we're at at the end of the season," he said. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: ESPN2 televised the final round of the Reno Rodeo on Sunday night. For those who missed it, the program will be re-broadcast tonight at 9:30 on ESPN2.

ON THE MEND: Two days after the Reno Rodeo closed the gates on its 2002 show, Garry Jackson, president of the Reno Rodeo Association, was in the hospital undergoing emergency bypass surgery. Jackson said he went in Monday for a stress test. "I guess it didn't go very well because of the Wrangler ProRodeo Summer Tour. With seven Tour rodeos left, Harry and Handy are in first place with 23 points. The top 12 point-getters in each event advance to the $750,000 U.S.
