QUARTERBACK
2023 Starter: DJ Uiagalelei (Florida State)
2024 Projected Starter: Gevani McCoy OR Gabarri Johnson
Outlook:
Oregon State loses both of their quarterbacks from the 2023 season as DJ Uiagalelei transferred to Florida State after throwing for 2,640 yards and 21 scores while the presumed quarterback of the future Aidan Chiles followed Jonathan Smith to Michigan State. New offensive coordinator Ryan Gunderson brought in a a pair of quarterbacks from the portal, landing Idaho transfer Gevani McCoy who threw for 43 scores as a Vandal and former 4-Star recruit and Missouri Tiger Gabarri Johnson. McCoy is much more experienced than his counterpart, however Johnson adds an element with his legs that McCoy does not possess. Ben Gulbranson appears to be back as well to compete for the job, although there have been rumblings of a move on to Med School. Dom Montiel and Travis Throckmorton will provide depth while freshman Kallen Gutridge will likely redshirt.
RUNNING BACK
2023 Starter: Damien Martinez
2024 Projected Starter: Damien Martinez
Outlook:
No changes here. Damien Martinez is one of the best running backs in the country, as the 232-pounder has rushed for 2,167 yards and 16 scores as a Beaver and is certain to push for 1,000 yards again in 2024. The loss of Deshaun Fenwick behind him stings, however Oregon State should be just fine as Isaiah Newell is a talented player and Colorado transfer Anthony Hankerson has shown a pass-catching ability that the Beavers lacked in 2023. The best backup however should be Jam Griffin, who is back in Corvallis after a season-long stint at Ole Miss. Griffin ran for 488 with the Beavers in 2022 and the addition of him to go with Martinez, Newell and Hankerson gives OSU one of the deepest running back rooms in the nation.
WIDE RECEIVER
2023 Starters: Anthony Gould (NFL), Silas Bolden (Texas), Jesiah Irish (Graduation)
2024 Projected Starters: Darrius Clemons, Jimmy Valsin, Jeremiah Noga
Outlook:
Three new faces will be starting at receiver for Oregon State in 2024 following the graduation of Jesiah Irish, transfer of Silas Bolden and Anthony Gould's move to the NFL draft. Returning for the Beavers are Jimmy Valsin, Jeremiah Noga and Trent Walker, all of whom are juniors that have experience against top-level Pac-12 programs. Valsin has shown big-play ability, catching touchdowns against Arizona and Notre Dame as a sophom*ore. Joining those three will be Darrius Clemons, a former 4-Star recruit who won a national championship at Michigan this past season. All four of those wideouts are 6-foot-2 or taller, a drastic change from last season where all of OSU's starters were under 6-foot. Providing depth will be a quartet of talented redshirt freshman including David Wells, Zachary Card, Montrel Hatten and Tastean Reddicks. Keep on eye on Wells in particular to be a impact player in 2024. Oregon State also reeled in two fantastic true freshman who could be impact contributors in early enrollee Jordan Anderson and Malachi Durant. Don't be shocked if this group is actually improved in 2024 despite the loss of their top three wideouts.
TIGHT END
2023 Starters: Jack Velling (Michigan State) and Jermaine Terry
2024 Projected Starter: Jermaine Terry
Outlook:
It remains to be seen how tight ends will be utilized in Gunderson's system, but we are expecting to see a lot more 11 personnel (three wide receivers and one tight end) then in prior seasons. With Jack Velling's move to Michigan State it seems likely that Jermaine Terry will be the starter during the 2024 season. In his first year as a Beaver Terry caught six passes and a score and should see a larger role in the passing game this year. Providing depth will be Bryce Caufield, Gabe Milbourn and Cooper Jensen. Caufield is a pass-catcher in the mold of Luke Musgrave, while Milbourn is a Teagan Quitoriano like blocking tight end. Jensen redshirted as a freshman and should play a role during his second year as a Beaver.
OFFENSIVE LINE
2023 Starters:
LT: Joshua Gray
LG: Heneli Bloomfield (Graduation)
C: Jake Levengood (Graduation)
RG: Tanner Miller (Michigan State)
RT: Taliese Fuaga (NFL)
2024 Projected Starters
LT: Jacob Strand
LG: Joshua Gray
C: Van Wells
RG: Grant Starck
RT: Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan
Outlook:
It will be a new-look line for offensive line coach Kyle DeVan, as the Beavers lost Jake Levengood and Heneli Bloomfield to graduation, while seeing Tanner Miller transfer to Michigan State and Tali Fuaga declare for the NFL Draft. A huge returner however will be Joshua Gray. Gray will enter his fifth season as a starter for the Beavers and will kick inside to play offensive guard after spending his first four years as a tackle. Grant Starck will also be back after starting five games during his first year as a Beaver and will likely take over the right guard spot, although a move to tackle is a possibility. A pair of transfers from Colorado will likely slot into the starting five, as Van Wells will take over the center spot and Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan is the early leader for the right tackle spot. The frontrunner to replace Gray at left tackle is Jacob Strand, as the Canby high school product started games against Oregon and Notre Dame as a redshirt freshman. A pair of sophom*ores figure to provide depth, as Dylan Lopez and Luka Vincic both appear to be future starters for the Beavers. While this group likely won't match up to 2023's this is certainly a very solid O-Line and one of the better units on the west coast.
