Eight people, including a deputy jailer, have been indicted for conspiring to smuggle drugs into the Butler County Jail.

Police, according to the Beech Tree News, are being tight-lipped regarding details of the ongoing investigation. But the news outlet reports that the conspiracy was furthered by “Chirping,” which allows inmates to communicate with the outside world via texting.

All eight suspects were indicted by a Butler County Grand Jury for engaging in organized crime, trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and promoting contraband.

The activity that resulted in the indictments occurred between February 1, 2022, and February 12, 2022. Authorities believe, according to the news outlet, that the methamphetamine and any other drugs intended to enter the facility were intercepted by law enforcement.

Those indicted include:

  • Former Butler County deputy jailer, 39-year-old Vanaron Turgeon. He has since been fired from his position. Turgeon is lodged in the Grayson Co. Detention Center.
  • Hannah Swift, 20, of Morgantown. She was also indicted for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
  • Marvin McGuffin, 41. He’s lodged in the Butler Co. Jail.
  • Tiffany L. Swift, 26, of Ohio County.
  • Tony L. White, 38. He was also indicted on a first-degree persistent felony offender count.
  • Paul R. Cameron, 20. He is currently lodged in the Simpson Co. Detention Center. Cameron was also indicted on a first-degree persistent felony offender count.
  • Stephen E. Baskerville, 23. He is currently lodged in the Ohio Co. Detention Center. Baskerville was also indicted on a second-degree persistent felony offender count.
  • April Lacefield, 36. She is currently lodged in the Hardin Co. Detention Center.
